Okay, this post is going to be the first of many in a new category on this site.
I am going to create a Kayaking Near Me series for wherever I may be at that moment. Each post will highlight a kayaking spot, where you can go and see amazing things from your kayak. Some will be places I actually go, and others will be “bucket list places” and some will be “I wish places.”
How to Decide
How do we decide where to go with the kayak?
The first thing you want to do is consider your skill level. If you are a beginner, please don’t take a kayak through the Grand Canyon by yourself.
As a beginner, I like to stay close to home right now and on nice calm water. I have plenty of places to explore around here to keep me busy. Although, I do have a bucket list of places within the state I am currently in.
What kind of kayaking are you planning on doing? That will surely determine where you are going to go.
Money may be a determining factor as well. Are you taking your own kayak or planning on using a rental company? There are a lot of kayak rental places out there, and some have pre-planned trips or adventures you can do.
Planning Your Trip
When you are planning your kayaking adventure, are you just going kayaking or is that part of the bigger picture? Meaning, are you taking a trip like camping in a remote place, going to a place that is specifically for kayaking or are you going to add a kayak trip to your vacation itinerary?
Is it going to be a fishing trip with your kayak or are you just staying close to home for a leisurely float on the lake?
No matter what the trip may be, planning is always a good idea. Not every trip will require a ton of planning. I like a good spur of the moment adventure myself. But, there are some basic things you should do for every trip. Check out my last post, “Kayaking for Beginners – The Checklist” for more info on that.
Now, if you are planning on adding a kayak adventure to a vacation, you are going to want to check out the local kayaking spots.
Where to Look
You have a few options for finding kayaking spots near and around you. Of course, there is the internet. Google seems to know everything these days. Travel blogs are another great source of information.
If you are in a town like Branson, Mo., there are vacation guides and brochures everywhere to help you decide what you want to do on your vacation. I am sure most tourist areas do.
Ask the locals. If anyone would know the best spots to kayak in, it would be the people that live in the area.
I grew up in Ohio, and any of the major areas where there was good kayaking or inner tubing, you could find the outfitters. The outfitters are the folks that rent kayaks, canoes and inner tubes and they usually have predetermined trips. They drop you off and then they also provide transportation back to your vehicle. They are usually pretty easy to find. I know in Ohio they used to line the riverbank near the small towns that were close.
My goal for this category is to share with you exciting places to take your kayak. Not only do I want to share my adventures with you, but I want to do the hard work for you and create an exciting list that you can come back to, to plan your next adventure.
I am going to start where I am and highlight some exciting places around me, and as I branch out, I will add more as I go. I will also include places to rent kayaks in those areas, just in case you don’t have the means to take your own.
Let’s Get Kayaking
All I want to do is float down the river and take beautiful pictures, clear my mind and be part of the natural world around me. Kayaking is a great way to do all those things.
So, thanks for taking the time to come hang out with me, my hope is to provide you with some great places to explore, and to provide the information to make it easier for you to plan your next adventure.
